Effective Pedagogical Practice at CSS

Pedagogy refers to the “interactions between teachers, students, the learning environment and the learning tasks”. This broad term includes how teachers and students relate together as well as the instructional approaches implemented in the classroom.

A Pedagogical Model describes what effective teachers do in their classrooms to engage students in their learning. Carson Street places a high priority on ensuring that, in their day-to-day teaching, classroom teachers identify and address the learning needs of individual students.  To assist our approach to individualised program delivery, a variety of pedagogical models are used.

Pedagogy at Carson Street is underpinned by the following principles:

1. The learning environment is supportive and productive.

2. The learning environment promotes independence, interdependence and self-motivation.

3. Students’ needs, backgrounds, perspectives and interests are reflected in the learning program.

4. Students are challenged and supported to develop thinking skills and application.

5. Assessment practices are an integral part of learning and teaching.

6. Learning connects strongly with communities and practice beyond the classroom.
