REACH

The REACH Satellite Program

The REACH class is a satellite program offered to select students enrolled at Carson Street School. While officially part of a special needs school, the REACH class operates within Belmay Primary School, a nearby mainstream school. This program provides students with specialised support in a dedicated classroom, while also offering opportunities to engage in mainstream activities and interact socially with peers.

Key Features of the Satellite Program:

  1. Placement: Students remain enrolled at Carson Street School but attend their classes at Belmay Primary School.
  2. Specialised Instruction: A skilled special education teacher, supported by education assistants, delivers tailored instruction to address individual learning needs.
  3. Inclusion Opportunities: Students can participate in selected mainstream activities based on their abilities and interests, fostering social integration and a sense of belonging.
  4. Transition Support: Satellite programs facilitate gradual transitions from specialised settings to more mainstream environments, supporting student growth and adaptability.

 Benefits of the Satellite Program:

  1. Access to Peers: Students benefit from meaningful interactions with general education peers while receiving essential support.
  2. Familiar Environment: Learning within a mainstream school helps students feel connected to their local community.
  3. Individualised Learning: The program offers tailored instruction to meet each student’s unique needs.

The REACH program at Belmay Primary School is a well-established initiative that empowers students to build confidence and independence by combining the strengths of both specialised and mainstream educational environments.
